Zespri® Green Kiwifruit Chilli Chutney

ZESPRI PUREE INGREDIENTS

  • 3 Zespri Green Kiwifruits, peeled
  • 3 dried red chillis OR whole green fresh chillies
  • 5 shallots, peeled
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ¾ tsp Salt or to taste

    TEMPERING INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3 stalks curry leaves, leaves plucked from stalks
  • 5 small dried chillies
  • 2 tsp urud dhal

Directions

  1. Chop peeled Zespri Green Kiwifruits roughly.

  2. Wash dried chillies OR cut fresh green chillies into 1 cm lengths.

  3. Heat the oil and fry the shallots, whole dried chillies OR green chillies and saute for 1 minute.

  4. Add the Zespri Green Kiwifruits and saute for about 30 seconds till they are soft. Add the salt.

  5. Allow to cool a little.

  6. Blend till fine. Put into a small serving bowl.

  7. FOR THE TEMPERING: In another clean pot or wok, heat the oil over medium heat for the tempering and add the mustard seeds which should be sizzling and fry till they pop before adding the curry leaves, whole dried chillies and urud dhal and fry till fragrant.

  8. Pour over the Zespri Green Kiwifruit mixture immediately.

  9. Serve with rice or thosai with curries for an Indian-inspired breakfast. Or serve as a dip with pita bread or with buttered toast.
